Fostering Healthy Mental, Emotional, and Behavioral Development in Children and Youth

2019

This report from the National Academies Press (NAP) calls for the prioritization of mental, emotional, and behavioral (MEB) health for children and youth. In 2015, suicide was the number two cause of death among people ages 15-24, with rates of depression and self-harm also rising – despite new research taking place. The authors of the report suggest that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) should step in, pushing to make MEB health a priority. This would be accomplished by coordinating a highly visible national effort through public and private collaboration, specifying goals and objectives for MEB health, collecting data on MEB trends, and implementing interventions to support MEB health. The report is accompanied by an executive summary that shares key findings.
