Lancet Series 2019: Tuberculosis

2019

This Lancet Series explores current challenges that remain in treating tuberculosis (TB) globally, such as the need for improvement in diagnosis of multidrug-resistant TB—currently affecting four to six percent of the global population. The Series also illuminates the lack of attention to children with TB in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment—with an estimated 1 million children undiagnosed and untreated each year. Although progress has been made in research and development of TB vaccines in the past 20 years, many hurdles remain to license and implement vaccines in clinical settings. While the previous TB Series examined new drugs, regimens, and therapies, the 2019 Series delves into specific challenges that must be addressed in order to eliminate TB worldwide.
