Lancet Series 2019: Double Burden of Malnutrition
2019
This Lancet Series explores the double burden of malnutrition (DBM)—the coexistence of overnutrition (overweight and obesity) and undernutrition (stunting and wasting)—in country-wide populations and in individuals at various points in life. Of particular importance, DBM has shown to have long-lasting health effects including increased risk for non-communicable disease. These changes have occurred due to rapidly changing diets—namely moving towards more processed foods and beverages—norms of eating, and reduced levels of physical activity at work, transportation, and in the home. Surfacing evidence shows the interconnectedness between undernutrition and overnutrition in individual and population health, and therefore the series focuses on multi-dimensional policy efforts that must be enacted alongside societal shifts in attitude scaling up to the global food system structure.
Series papers include:
- Dynamics of the Double Burden of Malnutrition and the Changing Nutrition Reality
- The Double Burden of Malnutrition: Aetiological Pathways and Consequences for Health
- Double-Duty Actions: Seizing Programme and Policy Opportunities to Address Malnutrition in All its Forms
- Economic Effects of the Double Burden of Malnutrition
