Power to the People

2019

This report from the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) focuses on the changes in HIV and AIDS policies that have been sparked by community-led civic engagement. In the early days of the HIV epidemic, people living with HIV and other key populations at high risk of infection pushed for the creation of antiretroviral medicines (ARVs) and then forced the prices down to make them more readily accessible to vulnerable populations. This community empowerment approach continues today, with access to ARVs only continuing to grow. This report outlines the progress made in testing, treatment, and prevention, while also covering the grassroots organizations that support HIV-positive peoples. This report includes six HIV-related case studies and numerous illustrated data figures.
