UNICEF Data Portal: Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

2024

This data portal from the United Nations Children’s Fund provides an overview of female genital mutilation (FGM) globally and presents current progress. FGM is still heavily practiced in Mali, Sudan, Somalia, Egypt, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Sierra Leone, and the Gambia―with all of these countries above 75 percent prevalence and Somalia at 99 percent. The prevalence rates are presented in an interactive map, where the user can hover over a specific country to see the percentage of girls and women who have undergone FGM. Additionally, the portal includes graphs presenting data on FGM attitudes and the percentage of girls who have undergone FGM over time. Additionally, downloadable data sets related to female genital mutilation are also provided.
