Rural Health Disparities

2023

This fact sheet from the Rural Health Information Hub examines and provides evidence for the differences in health outcomes between rural and urban populations. Health disparities, according to the fact sheet, are defined as differences in health status when compared to the population as a whole―normally characterized by higher disease burden, differences in mortality rates, and decreased life expectancy. This guide is organized by a list of frequently asked questions that addresses the distinction between health inequity and health inequality; the causes of rural health disparities; rural mortality and rural life expectancy compared to urban areas; and regions that experience higher levels of rural health disparities―to highlight a few. The fact sheet also provides numerous resources to further explore rural health disparities.
