Climate Change and Migration in Vulnerable Countries

2019

This report from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) focuses on the dynamics of migration within the countries most vulnerable to climate change’s negative impacts—least developed countries (LDCs), landlocked developing countries (LLDCs), and small island developing States (SIDS). In 2016, 13 out of the 15 countries most vulnerable to natural hazards were from these three groups. Least developed countries must cope with the double stress of climate change and migration, landlocked countries must navigate water stress and agricultural changes, and small islands must grapple with both the international and internal dimensions of climate impacts. The report walks through the unique migration- and climate-related challenges facing each group of LDCs, LLDCs, and SIDS, and proposes context-specific strategies for moving forward.
