A wide variety of disciplines address historic and present-day racial inequalities and injustices in their curricula. While a growing number of educators are bringing a racial justice lens to their classrooms, many express challenges in teaching this content effectively. This guide from the Vanderbilt University Center for Teaching and Learning summarizes common challenges educators might encounter and five pedagogical principles for teaching race:
- Common Challenges to Teaching Race
- Addressing Challenges Through Course Design
- Principle 1: Encourage Reflexivity
- Principle 2: Prepare for and Welcome Difficulty
- Principle 3: Meet Students Where They Are
- Principle 4: Engage Affective and Embodied Dimensions of Learning
- Principle 5: Build a Learning Community
Each principle is accompanied by three strategies for real-world implementation in the classroom.
