Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies: Taking Stock of Maternal Health

2019

This report from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) assesses pregnancy, maternal deaths, newborn health, and other measures of maternal health around the world. The number of women and girls who die each year due to issues related to pregnancy and childbirth decreased by 44% from 1990 to 2015, but pregnancy-related deaths, complications, and morbidity still remain as challenges. Pregnancy-related deaths and disability fall disproportionately on disadvantaged women living with less access to care; UNICEF reports that these women mostly live in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asian countries. Gender and socioeconomic inequalities, as well as humanitarian and environmental crises, have adverse effects on maternal health, impacting everything from antenatal care to care during pregnancy to postpartum care. The report provides figures with global data on indicators including rural-urban disparities, wealth disparities in health coverage, caesarean sections, and early childbearing. It also provides information on adolescent mothers, uneven access to care, child marriage, and population change. Readers can also interact with the data online.
