The Power of Cities: Case Studies

2020

These case studies accompany The Power of Cities report from the World Health Organization, which focuses on cities' and city leaders' obligation and ability to promote public health in urban environments and combat issues such as noncommunicable disease (NCD) and injuries due to road traffic incidents. The case studies focus on several cities in countries around the world including Ghana, The Philippines, India, Thailand, China, Indonesia, Colombia, South Africa, Benin, Brazil, Vietnam, Kuwait, the United Kingdom, the United States, Cambodia, and Austria. Each case study describes one specific intervention area (tobacco control, NCD surveillance, road safety, increasing physical activity, providing healthy food for all) and provides detail on the city's actions to address it, whether by policy changes, public initiatives, data collection, or other form of implementation.

Each of the case studies is available for download along with the full report. Users can find additional resources on other elements of healthy cities, including designing smoke-free spaces, improving access to healthy food, increasing physical activity, reducing air pollution, and addressing road safety. Each of these is part of the global Partnership for Healthy Cities, a network of cities around the world to deliver high-impact policy and programmatic interventions.
