Lancet Commission 2020: The Lancet NCDI Poverty Commission

2020

This Lancet report presents the work of a Commission to address non-communicable diseases and injuries (NCDIs) and their impact on people living in low-income and lower-middle-income countries (LLMICs). NCDIs – which include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, cancer, and associated risk factors – account for more than a third of the burden of disease among people in LLMICs, half of which specifically afflicts children and young adults.

This Commission aimed to rethink and restructure global policies, address the severe health disparities, and expand the global health agenda to resolve inequities. The report includes five major sections: the burden of NCDI poverty; integrating NCDI poverty in universal health care; financing to address NCDI poverty; global and national policy, governance, and agenda-setting for NCDI poverty; and making room for NCDI poverty in the UHC agenda in the Sustainable Development Goal era. It also includes global case studies and personal stories highlighting the “Voices of NCDI Poverty” around the world.
