Regional Hygiene Snapshots

2020

These regional snapshots from the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations International Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) provide key data and statistics on hygiene baseline indicators from before the COVID-19 outbreak. The WASH data portal includes a snapshot for each major UNICEF region: East Asia and the Pacific, Eastern and Southern Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Middle East and North Africa, North America, South Asia, West and Central Africa, and Western Europe. Each snapshot uses visuals, graphs, and data tables to illustrate trends in hygiene within each region. Snapshots provide information on handwashing facilities with soap and water in households, schools, and health care facilities; the availability of basic water services in each country within the region; progress towards the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) standards for basic WASH services; and disparities in access to facilities between socioeconomic groups and between urban and rural areas. The regional profiles also include related resources, technical briefs, reports, and monitoring systems.
