Global Spending on Health: Weathering the Storm
2020
This report published by the World Health Organization (WHO) analyzes global health spending for 190 countries. The report shows that global spending on health rose consistently between 2000 and 2018 and reached $8.3 million or 10% of global GDP. The share of out-of-pocket spending in total health spending remained above 40% in low- and lower-middle-income countries. It is likely that the health and economic shocks caused by Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) will have consequences for health spending and progress towards universal health coverage. The shocks from COVID-19 should be leveraged to build back better, well-financed, and resilient health systems.
