Climate Change, Health, and Equity: A Guide for Local Health Departments

2018

This guide published jointly by the Public Health Institute and the American Public Health Association outlines ways in which local public health departments can address health inequities. It discusses what local health departments can do to include climate change and health equity into assessment and surveillance, intersectoral collaboration, community engagement and education, climate and health communications, preparedness, and more. Climate change exacerbates health inequities, affecting a multitude of fields ranging from agriculture to transportation and housing to energy. Unfortunately, these burdens are placed disproportionately on low-income communities, communities of color, native and tribal communities, youth and the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses. A more intentional redesign of U.S. systems and communities will need to take place in order to do justice to the planet and its people.
