Reimagining Girls' Education in Emergencies

2021

This report from the United Nations Children's Fund highlights evidence-based actions to support girls' education in low- and middle-income country humanitarian settings and settings where COVID-19 has disrupted education. Girls in emergencies are disadvantaged at all stages of education, and current research indicates that by 2030, one in five girls in crisis-affected countries will not be able to read a simple sentence.

Each section of the report explores different dimensions of tackling this growing problem: promoting gender-responsive and inclusive programming; strengthening gender-responsive distance-learning education; leveraging social protection to reduce financial barriers to education; and understanding program costs to get value-for-money. The solutions featured in this report are designed to support learning outcomes and continuity of learning for pre-primary, primary, and adolescent-aged girls in a variety of emergency contexts.
