UNHCR: Teaching About Refugees

2024

As forced displacement has reached a historic high, refugee children are increasingly entering schools and teachers often face new challenges in both teaching about the crisis and teaching individuals who have been impacted by this crisis. This resource portal from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) provides comprehensive guidance for educators on how to teach about refugees, asylum, migration, and statelessness. Each section includes a short animation and class discussion sheet.

The portal also separates teaching materials by age—6-9, 9-12, 12-15, and 15-18—allowing educators to curate virtual or hybrid lesson plans suitable to their specific needs. Of note, the modules also describe what genres of activities might be most pedagogically and developmentally appropriate for that age group. Each module page features a primary curriculum about refugees, asylum, and migration; a teacher's guide for introducing related topics in the classroom; and audio-visual resources.

The portal culminates with expert guidance on how to support refugee students in the classroom and design learning environments that meet the language learning needs of this student population.
