A Sticky Situation: A Medical Problem with a Social Solution

2020

This case from the Western Public Health Casebook 2020 focuses on the complex risk communication problem of vaccine hesitancy. Lisa Walters, Public Health Consultant, has been working diligently to develop an effective risk communication message that targets vaccine-hesitant parents and addresses the core problem of framing. She is participating in a media interview, but doesn't feel prepared and worries her message will add to the negative media landscape on vaccines. However, her immunization team is having difficulty figuring out where to start in developing an effective message. Through the case, students will consider which stakeholder should convey the message on vaccination and any potential drawbacks, as well as think through the modality for risk communication that will be most appealing.

This case contains guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. It is part of a 16-case collection written by students in the MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be freely copied and used for educational purposes by an accredited educational institution.
