The State of Food and Agriculture 2023

2023

This report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) analyzes global agrifood systems and the costs of sustainable food systems. This year’s report discusses the hidden health, environmental, and social costs of agrifood systems– along with the benefits– and provides a framework, true cost accounting (TCA), to assess these costs and work toward sustainability in food systems. The report presents country-level TCA assessments for 154 countries worldwide and estimates that the hidden costs of agrifood systems on health, society, and the environment amount to at least $10 trillion per year, with the greatest burden of these costs falling on low-income countries. The report urges the need for in-depth assessments of the hidden costs of agrifood systems to guide policymakers and inform decision-making in transforming agrifood systems.

Along with a digital version of the report, The State of Food and Agriculture 2023 is accompanied by an executive summary, video summary, and an interactive story
