The Changing Childhood Project

2021

This report from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) aims to explore the experiences of childhood, utilizing perspectives from young people aged 15-24 and adults aged 40 and older. In the face of a more globalized, digital, and rapidly changing society, this project seeks to understand the experiences of childhood for youth today, collecting data across 21 countries worldwide. The report offers data surrounding two central questions- “What is it like growing up today?” and “How do young people see the world differently?” The report includes data figures on topics such as digital technology use, mental health, marriage, climate change, LGBTQ+ rights, equity, and economic mobility—comparing the views of two generations, youth aged 15-24 and adults over 40.

The report is accompanied by an interactive site designed for users- especially children and youth- to engage with key findings and questions from the report. Users can also view the research tools and methods utilized for the project online.
