World Water Development Report 2022: Groundwater: Making the Invisible Visible

2022

This report, published by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on behalf of UN-Water, examines the opportunities and challenges surrounding the development, management, and governance of groundwater globally. As groundwater accounts for 99% of all liquid freshwater on Earth, the report aims to understand its role in daily life and how to best manage and sustain its use as global reliance on groundwater increases.

The report outlines the state of groundwater resources around the globe by region and includes chapters surrounding groundwater governance, groundwater’s relationship to agriculture, human settlements, and ecosystems, the impacts of climate change on groundwater resources, and more. The report also includes regional perspectives on groundwater resources and examples of groundwater policies and planning systems. The report is accompanied by an executive summary, a fact sheet of key statistics and figures, and a site where users can explore main findings and resources from the report.
