The Journey Toward Comprehensive Sexuality Education: Global Status Report

2021

This report, a joint publication by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women), World Health Organization (WHO), and Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), analyzes countries’ progress toward delivering comprehensive sexuality education (CSE). School-based CSE plays a central role in promoting the health and wellbeing of children and young people and equips youth with knowledge related to sexual and reproductive health, as reflected in the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Using data from 155 countries, the report offers a snapshot of the global status of CSE, assessing five key factors that influence quality sexuality education: laws and policies, program coverage, curricula, delivery, and environment. The report also includes a section on sexuality education during the COVID-19 crisis. The report finds that while 85 percent of countries surveyed have policies related to sexuality education, additional factors influence both the comprehensiveness and implementation of programs worldwide. Included in the report are case studies detailing regional and country examples of CSE programs, approaches, and initiatives.
