Lancet Commission 2022: Cancer in Sub-Saharan Africa

2022

This Lancet Oncology Commission report examines the action required to substantively tackle cancer, a rapidly growing health problem in sub-Saharan Africa where cancer incidence has doubled in the past 30 years. In addition to illustrating the current state of cancer in the region, the report emphasizes how fragile health systems in sub-Saharan Africa are ill-equipped to address this mounting health burden, pointing to problems like incomplete cancer registries; poor access to screening, diagnostics, and treatment; lack of palliative care; and a shortfall of trained medical personnel. The Commission features case studies of promising approaches that address these gaps—such as telehealth—and underscores the key role of political will and workforce development in tackling the coming crisis. The Commission’s report is accompanied by an infographic, audio podcast, and several related commentaries.
