Lancet Commission 2022: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
2022
This Lancet Commission report focuses on the growing burden of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and underscores new approaches toward eliminating the disease worldwide. The report urges an approach toward COPD that considers the heterogeneity of the disease and the widespread factors contributing to the rising global burden of respiratory illness, such as exposure to pollutants, the aging of the global population, and the unchecked sale of tobacco products. The report proposes classifying COPD into five types based on its major risk factors: genetics, early-life events, infections, exposure to tobacco smoke, and environmental exposures. The Commission's report provides a detailed overview of the challenges in COPD prevention and calls for investment in research, new COPD therapeutics, and the implementation of new guidelines for diagnosing and treating the disease.
The report is accompanied by profiles, related commentaries, and editorials.
