State of the World's Drinking Water

2022

This report from the World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), World Bank Group presents global progress on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, Target 6.1, on universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water. According to the report, in 2020, 74 percent of the global population used safely managed drinking water. While this marks definitive progress over the last two decades, geographic disparities remain both within and across countries. In addition, the rate of progress is threatened by climate change, competing water needs, and existing threats to water quality. The report outlines current investments in increasing access to drinking water, the status of regulation, approaches to bolstering water management and governance, and expanding data collection.
