WHO Fact Sheet: Commercial Determinants of Health

2023

This fact sheet from the World Health Organization (WHO) describes the drivers and impact of commercial determinants of health. "Commercial determinants of health" are activities in the private sector that affect people’s health positively or negatively. They arise during the provision of goods or services for payment, including the commercial activities themselves and the context in which they occur. For example, intensive animal agriculture is a leading cause of deforestation and growing antimicrobial resistance.

These determinants affect everyone, but negative effects disproportionately impact youth and already marginalized communities. They have the potential to exacerbate preexisting inequities in a community both directly and indirectly, through their influence on economic systems. The fact sheet also outlines potential for private-public collaborations that comprehensively address the long-term effects of the commercial determinants of health.
