Educator Guide: Equity in Practice Activity

2023

A public health classroom that makes space for the diversity and breadth of student experience encourages a deeper conversation about the complex, interdisciplinary challenges of the current moment. However, identifying and implementing practices that support inclusive, equitable instruction can sometimes feel abstract.

To illustrate what this could look like in reality, the Global Health Education and Learning Incubator at Harvard University (GHELI) has annotated an activity that incorporates best practices for supporting the voices of students of all backgrounds. The content of the activity focuses on about racial disparities in the U.S. related to COVID-19 and is appropriate for undergraduate and graduate levels. The activity leverages active learning strategies that can be translated across online, physical, or hybrid educational settings.

This guide flags both the rationale and associated evidence embedded in each practice for equitable instruction—what we have called “Pedagogy in Practice”—so educators can consider how to adapt these approaches for their own classroom contexts.

The guide integrates resources from two curated collections:

The Global Health Education and Learning Incubator at Harvard University supports interdisciplinary education about world health through the production, curation, and dissemination of educational public goods.
