Lancet Series 2023: Breastfeeding
2023
This Lancet series examines how the value of breastfeeding is undermined by governments and public health, exploring the strategies used by the commercial milk formula industry and its influence on breastfeeding practices worldwide. With less than half of global infants and young children breastfed according to WHO recommendations, this series explores how the commercial formula industry—along with politics and economics—impacts the breastfeeding of infants and young children worldwide.
The papers in this series discuss the attributes of mothers and infants that present challenges to breastfeeding, structural barriers, and effective policies and interventions. The authors address the marketing tactics of the formula industry and how they target parents, health professionals, and policymakers, and how corporate power and political and economic structures determine infant and child feeding practices and health outcomes.
Series papers include:
- Breastfeeding: Crucially Important, but Increasingly Challenged in a Market-Driven World
- Marketing of Commercial Milk Formula: A System to Capture Parents, Communities, Science, and Policy
- The Political Economy of Infant and Young Child Feeding: Confronting Corporate Power, Overcoming Structural Barriers, and Accelerating Progress
The Series articles are accompanied by a commentary article, an editorial, a video summarizing key messages, and downloadable infographics.
