Workshop Guide: Designing a Lesson Plan

2023

Section is an interactive laboratory where college students can wrestle with big questions in global health in a smaller environment than the lecture hall. It is an opportunity to apply broad population health concepts in class through tangible activities, case discussions, and interactive exercises. This 90-minute workshop, based on a Global Health Educator and Learning Incubator series, guides teaching fellows in thinking through how to design an effective and intentional lesson plan for a section in global health.

The workshop, downloadable through the link before, begins by asking teaching fellows to reflect on what they believe to be the goals of a section, who makes these goals, and how to take students’ perspectives into account when designing their section. Participants are then introduced to six core building blocks of section—building rapport, framing the lesson, querying prior knowledge, instruction, application, and reflection/metacognition—and engage in a collaborative exercise to co-create a section plan.

The Global Health Education and Learning Incubator at Harvard University supports interdisciplinary education about world health through the production, curation, and dissemination of educational public goods.
