Lancet Series 2023: Global Inequity in Diabetes

2023

This Lancet Series examines the impacts of structural racism and geographical inequity on the global diabetes crisis. The Series builds on the work of the Lancet Commission on Diabetes, which did not study racism as part of the environmental and social determinants of diabetes. The papers in this series show how structural inequities amplify and compound the upstream and downstream social determinants of health, which leads to greater prevalence of diabetes and poorer outcomes for those who experience injustice. Series papers examine the mechanisms by which structural inequity plays a role in diabetes prevalence and treatment globally and in the U.S., and they discuss how interventions addressing the unequal outcomes of diabetes must address inequities in the larger social context.
