This Lancet series discusses the relationship between work and health, examining how work and working conditions influence health outcomes and disparities. As the world changes with the rise of technology, shifting cultures, and political, social, and environmental crises , the Series aims to examine how the changing nature of work influences working conditions and related health outcomes.
The authors highlight the importance of viewing work and employment as a social determinant of health, arguing that the health sector has focused largely on addressing specific occupational hazards rather than improving work environments as a whole. The papers in the series discuss the emerging challenges related to work, the relationship between work and mental health, and the potential of an inclusive labor market to improve health among older workers and those with chronic diseases or disabilities. The authors offer recommendations and interventions to policymakers and the health community to mitigate threats and improve workers’ health.
