Diagnostics for COVID-19: Moving from Pandemic Response to Control

2022

This review article published by the Lancet examines the diagnostics used in the COVID-19 pandemic response. The article examines the three major methods used in detecting COVID-19 (SARS-COV-2 infection): molecular tests (PCR), rapid tests, and antibody tests, and discuss the importance and purpose of each type. The authors analyze the role of diagnostic testing in pandemic response and discuss the usefulness of testing in containing pandemics and infectious disease outbreaks. The article calls for investment in diagnostic and surveillance tools to implement within health systems, better public health, and help mitigate future outbreaks or pandemics.
