Lancet Series 2024: Black Mental Health in the USA

This Lancet Series examines mental health care and well-being for Black communities in the United States, analyzing the role of systemic racism embedded in mental healthcare, political, and social systems in the U.S. The papers discuss the impact of racism on the health and well-being of Black Americans and evaluate the biased classification systems and origins of epidemiology. The authors also discuss various factors and systems that support comprehensive mental health care and promote the well-being of Black Americans in the face of racial oppression and discrimination– historically and in the present. The Series also highlights the potential benefits of community-based participatory research (CBPR) to improve the mental health of Black Americans.
