Child Food Poverty: A Nutrition Crisis in Early Childhood

2022

This report from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) examines the child food poverty crisis, presenting data on the number of children experiencing food poverty globally. UNICEF defines child food poverty as the state where children under five are not fed foods from a minimum of five of the eight food groups needed in early childhood. The report finds that 478 million children were experiencing food poverty in 2021 and distinguishes food poverty between two indicators: moderate food poverty and severe food poverty. The publication presents data illustrating the number of children living in food poverty globally, what comprises their diets, and the regions and countries they live in– and how these trends have shifted over time.

The brief is accompanied by a downloadable global database, which presents statistics on child food poverty by country.
