World Cancer Report: Cancer Research for Cancer Prevention

2020

This report from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) at the World Health Organization (WHO) provides a multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed assessment of current cancer research for cancer prevention in the last five years. Authors briefly summarize fundamental concepts in each chapter before carefully examining the latest research findings. In addition to chapters about disease burden and cancer biology, this year’s report includes a new section on the inequalities that affect cancer prevention worldwide.

Scientific evidence for the report comes from the IARC in collaboration with leading researchers from around the world following the 2017 World Health Assembly request to provide a global perspective on all measures for the burden of cancer. The report includes six major sections including Biological Processes in Cancer Development and The Basis for, and Outcomes from, Prevention Strategies. It encourages international collaboration in cancer research across epidemiology, laboratory science, and biostatistics, and a has a primary focus on prevention as the next major step towards reducing the cancer burden.
