Saving Lives, Spending Less: A Strategic Response to Noncommunicable Diseases

2018

This report from the World Health Organization (WHO) provides an overview of the value of investing in interventions that address noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), which represent the leading causes of death worldwide.

The publication outlines the most cost-effective, affordable interventions for preventing and controlling NCDs-– and their potential benefits for countries worldwide across health, economic, environmental, and social domains. The interventions, referred to as WHO's Best Buys, cover six main policy areas: tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, the management of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and the management of cancer. The report finds that an estimated 8.2 million lives could be saved in low-and lower-middle countries by 2030 - with the implementation of these policies. The publication describes the health impact and economic returns of investing in NCDs and urges policymakers and stakeholders to respond globally.
