Structural Racism and the COVID-19 Experience in the United States

2021

This article from Health Security investigates the structural drivers of COVID-19 in the United States, specifically examining differences across racial/ethnic groups. The authors analyze racial/ethnic disparities in exposure to COVID-19, risk mitigation behaviors, and COVID-19 risk perceptions and experiences. The article finds a significant impact of structural racism on COVID-19 health outcomes. Black and Hispanic individuals have an increased likelihood of experiencing factors related to structural racism, thus increasing potential exposure to COVID-19. The authors highlight the impact of structural conditions on health disparities for communities of color and urge immediate action, considering structural racism as a root cause of COVID-19 and other health disparities for racial/ethnic groups in the United States.
