Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights: An Essential Element of Universal Health Coverage

2019

This report from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) focuses on completing the unfinished agenda of the International Conference on Population and Development, as well as pushing forward a sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) agenda to meet the Sustainable Development Goal targets. The authors underline the importance of sexual and reproductive health and rights as a cornerstone of universal health coverage (UHC). As countries move to adopt a UHC agenda, they need to consider how sexual and reproductive health and rights policies can be met throughout a populations life course. The report lays out key targets for SRHR that need to be met, including reducing the global maternal mortality ratio, ending preventable newborn and child deaths, ending the AIDS epidemic, ensuring access to sexual and reproductive health care services, as well as achieving UHC overall. Included in the report are numerous case studies and country examples.
