The Effects of Climate Change on Migration, Health, and Poverty: Lesson Plan

2018

This is the first of two lesson plans in a teaching pack on climate change, migration, and health, developed by the Global Health Education and Learning Incubator at Harvard University. In this lesson, students learn how climate change impacts health and socioeconomic status, and examine policy-based approaches that aim to manage and mitigate these effects in individual countries. The lesson is based on policy briefs related to disaster management and economic development policies, and invites students to apply a global health framework to identify issues and trends, examine pathways and mechanisms, and identify and prioritize solutions. Companion materials in the teaching pack include an instructor’s note, a second lesson plan on “International Climate Change Policy and Negotiation,” an annotated bibliography, and glossary of terms. The teaching pack is designed to help undergraduate and graduate students learn to approach climate change as a complex global issue with local ramifications.
