International Climate Change Policy and Negotiation: Lesson Plan

2018

This is the second of two lesson plans in a teaching pack on climate change, migration, and health, developed by the Global Health Education and Learning Incubator at Harvard University. In this lesson, students consider the 2015 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UN FCCC) and the Paris Agreement to understand how international treaties and negotiations related to global governance play a role in domestic policies related to climate change. The lesson applies a global health framework, includes a sample script for classroom debate on one nation’s Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) to the Paris Agreement, and invites further discussion on the place of health and health equity in global climate policies. Companion materials in the teaching pack include an instructor’s note, another lesson plan on “The Effects of Climate Change on Migration, Health, and Poverty,” an annotated bibliography, and glossary of terms. The teaching pack is designed to help undergraduate and graduate students learn to approach climate change as a complex global issue with local ramifications.
