Lesson 1, Exhibit A: Gender Equity Statistics Snapshot

2017

This data exhibit provides a snapshot of key gender-, health-, and education-related indicators for Pakistan and the United States, and accompanies “Gender Equity, Education, and Health,” a lesson plan which introduces high-school students to a broad concept of health. In that lesson, students analyze the social context in Malala’s case and identify the determinants of health, or the environmental, social, and economic conditions outside the body, that may affect health. More specifically, students describe barriers that children—especially girls—face when trying to attend school, and compare and contrast the experience of girls in Pakistan and the United States.

This resource is part of the “Gender, Conflict, and Education” teaching pack, which was developed by the Global Health Education and Learning Incubator at Harvard University. This module focuses on the intersection of gender, conflict, and education through the experience of Malala Yousafzai, who in 2012 was shot by members of the Taliban due to her educational activism. It emphasizes the connection between education and long-term health outcomes, as well as the responses that are necessary to impact social determinants of health. The teaching pack includes an instructor’s note, a short case study on Malala, four lesson plans with supplemental exhibits, an annotated bibliography, and a select glossary of terms.
