Brief Introduction to the Social Determinants of Health: Teaching Guide

2018

This teaching guide is part of a teaching pack, developed by the Global Health Education and Learning Incubator at Harvard University, that introduces high school and undergraduate college students to the “social determinants of health,” which are the social factors external to an individual that may not seem directly relevant to health, but that ultimately shape the conditions in which people live, work, and grow in ways that can both promote well-being and confer disease risk. The guide provides educators with a brief introduction to the social determinants of health, and describes and illustrates several possible frameworks that may be used to teach these concepts to high school and undergraduate students. The teaching pack also includes an instructor’s note with learning objectives, four lesson plans, an annotated bibliography, and a glossary of terms. Each of the lessons may be taught independently, or together in a module. The guide would be suitable for professional educators and teaching fellows with limited expertise in presenting public health concepts in the classroom.
