2023 Food Insecurity in the Near East and North Africa

2023

This report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) provides a regional overview of food security and nutrition in the Near East and North Africa. This report provides the latest data on undernourishment, food insecurity, and malnutrition in the region and measures progress toward meeting the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 targets for ending hunger globally.

The 2023 report finds that the level of hunger in the Arab states in 2022 reached its highest level since 2000. The report also examines the effects of the war in Ukraine, record-high food and fertilizer prices, and extreme weather events on food security and nutrition in the region.

The report provides prevalence estimates for stunting, wasting, and overweight indicators for children under five and statistical tables for additional nutrition indicators, exploring data across income levels and for conflict-affected and non-conflict countries. The report is accompanied by comprehensive data tables that provide prevalence estimates for each nutrition indicator by country.
