Teaching Pack: Opioids and Public Health

2017

This teaching pack focuses on opioid use and the global pain epidemic. It features a lesson plan, “An Opioid Epidemic for Whom?” that is designed for interactive classroom learning about the various factors contributing to the opioid epidemic in the United States, and to place it within a larger global context.

Students are invited to contrast the opioid epidemic in the U.S. with the dearth of pain relief medications available in low- and middle-income countries. Through a structured role-play activity, students discuss the complex ways that responses to the U.S. epidemic may impact the provision of palliative care at a global level.

The main components include a lesson plan, instructor's note, annotated bibliography, and glossary of terms. Additional material includes a resource collection on the opioid epidemic in the United States which contains articles, reports, fact sheets, online learning and more.
