Community Health Profile: National Aggregate of Urban Indian Health Program Service Areas

2021

This report from the Urban Indian Health Institute evaluates the health outcomes of urban American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) communities in the United States. With 71 percent of AIAN people in the U.S. living in urban areas, this report aims to describe the health status of urban Native communities and highlight the needs and health priorities of AIAN people in cities. Analyzing more than 50 health indicators, the report aggregates and presents data on demographics, mortality, such as homicide and suicide rates, infectious diseases, substance use, mental health, and maternal and child health. The report aims to inform service provision for urban AIAN communities in the U.S. and describes the health disparities many AIAN individuals face compared to their non-AIAN counterparts.

Since 2000, the Urban Indian Health Institute (UIHI) has aggregated data to describe the health outcomes of urban Native people in the U.S. The 2021 report aggregates data from 45 Urban Indian Organization service areas and 125 counties across the U.S. and presents five-year estimates from 2013 to 2017.
