The State of the World's Children 2017: Children in a Digital World

2017

The 2017 State of the World’s Children report from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) provides the latest update to statistics compiled by UNICEF on child well-being. This year’s report focuses on the role of technology and digital access in the lives of children worldwide, and represents the first time UNICEF has comprehensively examined the dangers and opportunities that digital technology presents for children.

The report calls for a digital “bridge” for every child as well as digital parity, digital safety, and digital care. It urges governments, the tech sector, and telecom industries to “level the digital playing field” for children through policies, practices, and products that enable youth across the world to take advantage of technology to connect to opportunities while also protecting them from harm, exploitation, and abuse. Accompanying the report is an executive summary. Users can explore the latest data by downloading the updated statistical tables accompanying the 2017 State of the World's Children report.

Launched in 1980, The State of the World’s Children is the most comprehensive analysis of global trends affecting children. Each year, this flagship publication by UNICEF examines a key issue affecting children across the globe, and provides up-to-date and accessibly presented economic and social statistics on the countries and territories of the world, with particular reference to children’s well-being. All previous reports are made publically available on UNICEF’s website and can be read in multiple languages.
