Ageing, Older Persons and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

2017

This report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) examines the importance of addressing the needs and vulnerabilities of older persons in achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, which was adopted by the international community in 2015 and established 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to address global challenges through economic, social, and environmental progress. The report notes that aging cuts across multiple SDGs—including those related to poverty eradication, good health, gender equality, economic growth and decent work, reduced inequalities, and sustainable cities—and that protecting and promoting the rights of older people will be important in achieving those goals. As the aging population steadily grows worldwide, it is critical for governments and public health systems to shift policy and views on aging to focus on how they can provide better long-term care services and social protections for older persons.
