LGBT Health and Access to Care and Coverage

2018

In 2018, the Kaiser Family Foundation updated this issue brief describing disparities in health status, coverage, and access among LGBT populations in the U.S. In addition to providing demographic data, the brief also lays out recent data on health challenges, including chronic conditions, HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, mental health, sexual assault, physical violence, youth health, insurance coverage, and access to health care. Special attention is paid to discussing health issues in light of the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Supreme Court rulings on marriage equality, and other recent policy actions by the Trump administration that have impacted the LGBT community. A useful summary of federal policy changes on coverage and access to healthcare for LGBT populations is also provided, describing the ways the ACA impacts LGBT people, as well as the United States v. Windsor (2013) and Obergefell v. Hodges (2015) Supreme Court rulings.
