Lancet Commission 2017: Sexually Transmitted Infections

2017

This Lancet Infectious Diseases Commission report discusses the disease burden of sexually transmitted infections (STIs); the current challenges for research, practice, and policy; and new approaches to improve the clinical management of STIs and public health. The World Health Organization estimates that nearly one million people become infected each day with any of four curable STIs (chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and trichomoniasis), with particularly high incidence in low- and middle-income countries. STIs disproportionately affect marginalized groups such as sex workers and men who have sex with men, and the stigma and condemnatory moral attitudes associated with STIs have resulted in an unwillingness to prioritize STI control policies or research. This report discusses five key issues for STI control that face major global challenges and for which action is required.
