The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2022

2022

This report, The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture (SOFIA), is the flagship publication from the Fisheries and Aquaculture Department at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Published every two years, it provides an update on fisheries, aquaculture, and associated policy issues around the world for the use of policymakers, governments, civil society, and other actors involved in the fisheries and aquaculture sector. SOFIA also reports on steps towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to fisheries and aquaculture. Divided into four parts, the 2022 edition of the report focuses on “Blue Transformation” – a concept focused on transforming and expanding aquatic food systems and prioritizing global food security and nutrition targets. Part 1 of the report provides an overview of the state of fisheries and aquaculture worldwide; Parts 2 and 3 expand on Blue Transformation and its objectives toward innovation and expansion in the fisheries and aquaculture sector as part of the 2030 Agenda; and Part 4 details emerging issues, such as COVID-19, climate change, and gender equality- and their impact on sustainable fisheries and aquaculture globally.

  • Part 2: Towards Blue Transformation
  • Part 3: Blue Transformation to Achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
  • Part 4: Emerging Issues and Outlook
