2022 Environmental Performance Index

2022

This report, produced jointly by Yale University and Columbia University, summarizes key findings and trends from the 2022 Environmental Performance Index (EPI), a scorecard ranking 180 countries on 40 indicators across 11 issue categories on climate change performance, environmental health, and ecosystem vitality. The 2022 EPI assesses the state of sustainability in countries worldwide and analyzes global progress toward addressing environmental challenges and reaching policy targets. Issue categories include: climate mitigation, air quality, sanitation and drinking water, waste management, biodiversity, agriculture, and more. Among the 180 countries ranked in the index, Denmark leads the 2022 EPI with a score of 77.90, followed by the United Kingdom and Finland. The report finds that low-ranking countries reflect the need for greater focus on air and water quality, biodiversity, and climate change—as well as wider challenges such as civil unrest.

The report is accompanied by a policymakers’ summary, country profiles, and downloadable data resources, including EPI country scores (Excel format), EPI results by region (Excel format), and a zip file of the 2022 EPI datasets.
